Glück ist ... unsere neue kleine Küche!

Happiness is... our new little kitchen!

A new kitchen - a happy home!

We moved into our new home in mid-March and had several makeshift kitchens while we awaited our final, right and beautiful one.
Our first kitchen was in the basement on top of a plastic table... It consisted of a double ring hob, microwave and various electrical appliances, which made the transition from a small, kitchen-less apartment to our new home easier - including the beautiful new refrigerator. Our complete groceries were in boxes under the table... The logistics of this makeshift kitchen were challenging, to say the least. This is where I prepared meals, snacks and school lunches... I tried not to over use the ingredients as the dishes had to be washed in the small sink in the basement laundry room. My husband managed to hook up the dishwasher over a month after moving into the "no-go building zone eventual kitchen". We thought the dishwasher had been damaged in transit as we couldn't get it to work. Luckily it turned out that only the water in the kitchen was turned off. Et voila! A working dishwasher - everything above could now be washed... not perfect, but a little better.

In May, when the kitchen (actually the room where the kitchen was supposed to be) was tiled and painted to the top and prepared for the assembly of the kitchen cabinets, the mentioned table, hot plate, microwave and other appliances were moved upstairs from the basement. Here I produced the family meals with limited resources. My husband had one of our larger sinks mounted on a frame and with the dishwasher life just got easier - it was finally beginning to resemble a kitchen.

In June we were informed that the assembly date for our new kitchen was set. Yippeeee! The night before the miracle workers (aka Rettig) came, we had to once again remove all of our temporary kitchen utensils from the kitchen. While the kitchen builders were there, kitchen cabinets and tools were lying around everywhere. We had to complete an obstacle course to get from one side to the next - since cooking was not possible in this disaster zone, we visited the kebab shop after two nights.

But as the kitchen started to take shape, we began to forget all the trials and tribulations of our extreme kitchen situation since March... Well worth the wait because we ended up with something beautiful - a real kitchen with chic counter and cabinets, our stunning, hand-made sink, our adorable faucet, our serene turquoise mosaic tiles, a brand new oven and hob, fantastic extraction - it all fitted so well and our options seemed limitless. I can now spend hours combining ingredients and creating delicious meals and baked desserts. It is no longer a chore but a joy.

Three months of upheaval and surprisingly little space brought us to the conclusion: Happiness is ... our new little kitchen!
